Where the Bar Code finds its limit the radio tags have numerous advantages. Their come in a range of shapes and sizes and can be encapsulated in a variety of materials to provide a high level of design flexibility. They can store far more information than a Bar Code, do not need line of sight to be read and can operate over a distance of many metres.
Harsh environments that could make a conventional bar code unreadable present no problems for the radio tag, and they can be read through most type of packaging materials.
